GIS and Geodatabase

GIS and Geodatabase are a useful and quick tool to arrange all types of large archaeological databases

GIS (Geographical Information System) and Geodatabase (digital archives of geographic and spatial data) are commonly used to store, manage and map geographical elements. GIS and Geodatabase allow to relate to each other geographic data of different nature on the basis of their common geographical reference. The specificity of GIS in archaeology is that archaeological data – which can be treated as geographical data – are connected with each other on the basis of their spatial location.

Example of GIS modeling of sound propagation (soundshed) from a sample of archaeological sites (post-palaeolithic rock art shelters , Alicante, Spain) – Project “SONART – the sound of rock art

In this framework, GIS and Geodatabase are a useful and quick tool to arrange all types of large archaeological databases (eg. maps, plans, surveys, photographs, excavation documentation, stratigraphic unit forms, etc.). In GIS, archaeological data are digitized, georeferenced and treated as different digital information layers superimposed to a cartographic base. GIS and Geodatabase software, both commercial and open-source, can also perform complex statistical calculations – very difficult, if not impossible, to perform manually – such as topological overlay, databases queries from spatial criteria (proximity, inclusion, overlapping, etc.), network analysis, spatial analysis, surface analysis and geostatistical analysis.

Example from the digital output for the Archaeological Map of the municipalities of Spoleto and Campello sul Clitunno performed on behalf of the Community Montana of the Monti Martani, Serano and Brunette (project “Itinerari nela Storia“)

ArcheoRes – Archaeological Research Group design custom GIS and relational Geodatabase according to the different needs of customers.
